Here's what under your display : LCD vs OLED

Of course, you might have heard that OLEDs are the great one can opt for.  We're not gonna say 'hey, that's not the case'.  Instead, let's look at the reason with some detail.

Introduction

We encounter displays everywhere in our daily life. May it be Smartphones, Television, Laptops, Computers, Smart Watches and in many areas. Normally a good display should have better colour accuracy, better viewing angles and better brightness though. What makes a display better in these areas. Let's look at it

Comparison

In LCDs we are looking at the light which is created at the backmost portion of the display, then the light passes through a variety of colour filters. So, this is how it works in case of LCD. Whereas in the case of LEDs, it is just the same but for the backlighting, we use the LEDs. So yeah, LEDs are also a kind of an LCDs there's no argument there. But there is something special about OLEDs. Why so. Because the difference is not as simple as adding prefix O to LEDs.

LCD abbreviates as Liquid Crystal Display. Is it right to call LCD Display, then it'll be Liquid Crystal Display Display?

In OLED, each pixel is self-illuminating (they produce their own light), due to this nature they outperform LCD. There's a lot of advantages in using this  OLED rather than conventional LCD. OLEDs provide way better colour accuracy, they give true black and the contrast ratio is much higher than LCDs by consuming lower power. There a few cons as well. They are definitely expensive to manufacture. Experts claim that there's a possibility of burn-in as well. Lenovo explained this about this in detail. Check the link if you want.

QLED is not much different from normal LED TVs, but they contain a Quantum Dot layer between LED backlight and LCD layer to produce better colour. Samsung calls this QLED while sony calls this Triluminous Display. But most of their hardware parts are same.

Check out the video from Jerryrigeverything on QLED vs OLED in the youtube (not a paid promotion). He did compare even with a microscope.

Developments

Now, these ideas are being theoretical, when we keep IPS LCD and OLED side-by-side, one can find the difference if he wants( we mean the difference is neither eye-catching nor bearly visible).AMOLEDs can be made thinner and nearly transparent, now we can place the fingerprint sensor underneath the display.  It didn't stop there. More things are going on with the display tech. Now the higher refresh rate (usually higher than 60 Hz/fps) displays are getting popular these days. More the refresh rate is smoother it feels. This high refresh rate displays are getting popular among gamers.  Again it is cheaper to make a higher refresh rate LCDs than OLED.

This poll was held on Twitter by a smartphone brand CEO, of the 15k voters, 83.7% has opted for Lower refresh rate AMOLED because we guess that they need best media experience rather than smoothness. What do you prefer? . Tell us in the comments.

Samsung, a major Display manufacturer, has planned to stop producing LCD, by this year. There're leaks that they're working in a new display technology, which is a hybrid of both, they call it QD-OLED (Quantum Dot- Organic Light Emitting Diode). It is always interesting how these technologies are evolving.

Apple also has filed patent rights for mini-LED and micro-LED. Right now we don't have much information on the same. It is said that they might launch devices with any of this tech in 2021.

They comment that a user just needs to download the App and he'll earn up to Rs. 1000/- daily. Screenshot of poorly designed  Powerbank365  site They're claiming on their website that Share...

How (smartphone) displays are evolving?

Previously, we talked about the types of displays. Let's take a look at how these displays are evolving in a short brief.   Touchscreen Former CEO Apple, Steve Jobs introducing iPhone      When we were bored with the physical keypad to control our device. But 2007 changed it. The evolution began there. Apple introduced the first-ever iPhone with touch screen capability. But it isn't the first smartphone with touchscreen capability, the honor goes to LG KE850 (aka LG PRADA). LG announced this phone a month before Steve Jobs announced the iPhone on 9th January 2007.       The revolution began in this period. More companies started working on smartphones with touchscreen capability. Curved                            Samsung Galaxy Round (how it started)      When we think of display, often we will think of the flat one. But it doesn't end there. Our hands are curved,...
